Once upon a time, we baked bread by hand. They would combine the dough and knead it (press and fold) in preparation for baking. It was a lengthy and laborious process. Well, now there is a nifty little tool that can make making bread even easier and more fun — the bread lame!

The home baker uses a special tool called the bread lame to create designs on their loaves before they bake these off in the oven. It has a handle you hold, and a sharp blade to score the dough. Scoring is to make small cuts on the surface of the dough. That is why the word lame comes from the French word for blade.
